The Home of Modern Bungy Jumping (and a load of nutters!).
A.J. Hackett was largely responsible for commercial bungy jumping and especially
for publicising it with a number of extreme jumps including one from the
Eiffel Tower. The Original Commercial Bungy Site is still operating after
more than 10 years at the Kawarau Bridge, along with what was for a long
time the Holy Grail (at least for us AJ fans!) - the Skippers Canyon bridge.
More recently the third site, The Ledge, was opened overlooking Queenstown
- not particularly high itself but 400m above the town and mostly jumped
at night it is certainly different! On July 8th 1999, 3 members of DASC
were in the first ever group of punters to jump from the fourth site -
The Nevis Highwire Bungy, at 134m the highest of New Zealand's permanent
sites!
